We’re excited to share the news about our latest project – a custom sonic brand and music package for CNN’s newest Prime Time show “Erin Burnett OutFront”.

The producers of OutFront wanted music that would really set the show apart, something different from the traditional themes normally associated with television news. The music needed to have a fresh, “indie band” style sound that connects with today’s viewers without sounding contrived or over produced. That’s the kind of challenge we relish here at Stephen Arnold Music!

The music is built around a five-note signature that incorporates driving guitars, bass, drums and a touch of strings, resulting in a strong, modern sound that suggests courage and boldness. The package includes several variations that all underscore the personality of the show embodied in the title “OutFront”.

The show debuted on Monday, October 3rd. You can catch “Erin Burnett OutFront” weeknights on CNN at 7 pm EST.

CNN 9/11 Ten Years Later

We are honored to be entrusted by CNN to create the music for their coverage of “9/11- Ten Years Later.”

CNN will use the music in a range of shows and promotions during the week leading up to the commemoration, and a secondary, more sparse arrangement will play behind CNN’s live coverage of the unveiling of the 9/11 Memorial on Sunday, September 11.

In the creative process with the network, CNN requested that we compose music that carried a sense of dignity and remembrance. At the same time, the music had to fulfill more practical needs by effectively branding and unifying CNN’s weeklong coverage of the commemoration.

This assignment continues our longstanding relationship with CNN. Still, this opportunity is unique. Branded music is about making an appropriate emotional connection with the viewer. The range and complexity of emotions surrounding 9/11 goes far beyond words. We are very proud to take on the important and sensitive task of translating these emotions to music.

This music will support CNN programs during the week and through the September 11, 2011 coverage, including:

What a wild week in Las Vegas at the PROMAX Station Summit. Great catching up with old friends, meeting some new ones and getting the word out about our brand new “Locals Only” music package and platform. (Check out this article from TV Newscheck.com.)

Oh yea, and we also gave away two very cool guitars: a Martin D-18 acoustic signed by Willie Nelson was taken home by Eric Dahl, Regional Promotion Supervisor at WZTV, WUXP, WNAB, Nashville, TN; while Bob Mackowiak, Marketing Manager at WAVE-TV NBC, Louisville, KY nabbed a Fender Telecast signed by Tom Petty.

Also, Jason Lewis, Creative Services Director at WTAT and WMMP, Charleston, SC, won a 1960’s Fender Road Worn Strat; and Paul Fix, Promotions Manager at WVTV and WCGV, Milwaukee, WI, will stay warm this winter in a one-of-a-kind “Locals Only” letterman jacket.

Stephen Arnold Music Hooks “Shark Men”

If you’re like us, we’re going to watch anything with the word “shark” in it, but the show “Shark Men,” which features an extensive toolbox of custom music cues we created for the ten 60-minute episodes, is truly amazing. Each week a team of world-class anglers and scientists take on great white sharks in an unprecedented hands-on research initiative.

Rocking with Dr. Drew

Our good friends at CNN HLN asked us to compose the theme for their newest show “Dr. Drew,” starring everyone’s favorite addiction specialist Dr. Drew Pinsky, best known for “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” and “Sober House” on VH1, as well as the national radio show “Loveline.” The show premieres tonight at 9pm est on HLN.

Given HLN’s sonic brand — which tends to feature a quick, upbeat pace — and Dr. Drew’s popularity with younger audiences, we went with a highly-charged, guitar-oriented theme that felt like a good fit not only for the host and his audience, but for HLN as well.

Lou Dobbs Tonight Bows With Rockin’ Vault Track

TV commentator Lou Dobbs returned to the airwaves last night on the FOX Business Network (FBN) with his new show “Lou Dobbs Tonight.” Setting the tone was the show’s opening theme that comes from The Vault, the elite library of music maintained by Stephen Arnold Music .

We’ve worked with FBN in the past on a number of sonic branding projects. This time they selected a hard-edged guitar-driven track recorded with live guitar, drums and bass. The rock-flavored track is a perfect fit with FBN’s contemporary sonic brand, which targets a younger demographic than traditional business networks.

Remembering 8-Tracks

Earlier this week I came across this series of stories on NPR that looks back fondly on lost audio formats, with the first story on the history of 8-Track tapes.

A quick survey of the Stephen Arnold Music staff found that most had never seen an actual 8-Track let alone owned any.

Except of course Stephen himself, who not only owned them, he still has an actual working 8-Track recorder and a drawer full of albums (evidence below).

Yes friends, he never throws anything of musical value out, (no matter how negligible that value may be).
